In Alameda County, the Senior Injury Prevention Program (SIPP) is taking the lead in getting Fall Prevention Awareness Week proclamations issued by the County Board of Supervisors and all City Councils in the area. The county proclamation, with county specific data included, was prepared and submitted to an influential County Supervisor. This supervisor presented the Proclamation Proposal at a July meeting, and it was passed unanimously. The SIPP Coordinator then sent an e-mail request to all 12 mayors in Alameda County, asking for similar local proclamations. After follow-up phone calls, the Coordinator received assurance from 7 mayors’ offices that Fall Prevention Proclamations would be placed on their city council meeting agendas. SIPP will continue to encourage the remaining City Councils to pass Fall Prevention Awareness Week Proclamations, with a goal of 100% participation.
In addition, SIPP is preparing Fall Prevention Awareness Week Information Packets for distribution to all county senior centers. The information packets will include a list of suggested activities for senior centers to sponsor during Fall Prevention Week, a poster, fact sheets, and placemats and bingo cards with fall prevention messages.
