Menu of Advocacy Options

  • Obtain funding for new fall prevention programs or to enhance existing efforts
  • Create fall prevention task force / support existing fall prevention task force
  • Allocate funds for permanent staff at Area Agencies on Aging / Department of Public Health to oversee fall prevention efforts
  • Convince policy makers to adopt fall prevention as a priority and develop strategic action plan
  • Pass proclamations in support of Fall Prevention Awareness week
  • Meet with Public Health Medical Officers and Area Agency on Aging Directors to encourage them to adopt fall prevention as a priority in their organizations and include fall prevention in area plans.
  • Include fall prevention guidelines in county general plans.
  • Include fall prevention guidelines in local planning documents related to housing, parks/recreation, transportation, circulation, street/sidewalk repair, and emergency/disaster.
  • Use planning tools, such as condition of approval, to provide incentives for local developers to incorporate the principles of Universal Design and Home Modification
  • Support efforts to gather local fall-related data from hospitals / Emergency Medical Services
